So have they? Have they built a network marketing or mlm company before with integrity? Have they been in the trenches and have an understanding of how it’s done from their own kitchen table to the corporate office?
What I have found to be true from personal experience is that network marketing or any other mlm opportunities out there are completely different than running a corporate business. Network marketing is about relationships, building life long friendship with people who know, like and trust you. When that happens, then everything else falls into place.
Sure there are some similarities, but the key is that in the corporate business world it’s a bit more cut throat. In many cases you are just a number. Now I know that you may not like the sound of that but just think about the current state of the economy.
Picture all those people that trusted in the company that they so long dedicated themselves to, just to have it all ripped away in an instance. Retirement, gone. Lifestyles gone. Heck just the ability to put food on the table and keep their head above water gone.
This may be you right now.
I know that it has happened to me and the lifeless feeling, the anxiety and frustration that I felt. The feeling that I was, well for lack of a better term worthless. Yeah, that is a past that I only choose to learn from and never relive.
So why does it happen?
Two words; Greed and Ego.
Ouch, that’s a bit harsh but true.
Just look at one of the most notorious scum-bags of recent times, Bernard Madoff. This dirt-bag stole $50 Billion dollars from mostly his friends in a “Ponzi Scheme”.
“With friends like that, who needs enemies.”
What could he have been thinking? You know how many lives, how many families were destroyed because of it?
“But Ashley, this has nothing to do with me.”… Really think of it this way. Look at it from the perspective of the “butterfly effect”. If you are not familiar with it, let me give you a brief overview.
In the simplest form it means that every event, every movement is connected. That the simplest flap of a butterfly’s wings sets into motion a chain of events.
So back to the scum bag… I mean Madoff. With him taking all this money from well to do business owners and people of influence, what do you think they had to do to stay above water or to recuperate their losses?
Some had to cut back on management in the businesses that they owned. The management team that was left had to make some adjustments to show an improvement in their numbers so they had to release some workers.
Where did many of them go? Oh, to the unemployment office to file for benefits. Who pays for these benefits? We do in our taxes. Do you see the “butterfly effect”?
“So how on earth does all this relate to my network marketing business or mlm company?”
“Why on earth Ashley are you telling me all this.”
I promise you I am getting there.
So imagine yourself working for a network marketing company or an mlm of some sort that is currently privately held. All of the sudden they sell the company to a group of share holders that decide to come in and, well throw their own spin on things. they decide that they need to show higher profits for their investors.
Where do you think that money is going to come from?
You – your compensation plan all of the sudden changes and after all your hard work, you are now getting only half of what you use to make.
How does that feel?
This may not happen every single time, but it happens more times than you would like. But as the good “employee” you decide to take it because it’s what’s “best for the company” to grow.
To grow the investors pockets, not yours.
Wait a minute, didn’t you get into this business to own your life? To have the freedom that you deserve and to go after YOUR goals and dreams?
Then why take it?
What happens if you all of the sudden get a letter in the mail telling you that in the “best interest of the company” they have decided to terminate all of their field distributors?
What… that never happens?
Please, this happens more time than I would like. I can’t tell you how many horrific stories I have heard and learned of that similar things like this have happened to too many people I personally know.
I know that I am painting you the doom and gloom, but I am doing it to drive a point home. Actually a few points.
- Make sure that the company and you have the best interest for each other. Remember “Win-Win” or no deal.
- Do your homework on your company.
- Brand yourself, not the company. ( more on this later)
Alright Ashley, “I get it”.
But my companies management has experience in building network marketing company, after network marketing company, after network marketing company. Good, but did you ever wonder why they go from company to company?
I will dive in head first and tackle that piece in my next post. I know that you are going to be shocked in some ways about this. For now go and register for my free 5 day mini-boot-camp up at the top of this page just under that dorky video of me.

Great info Ashley. A friend of mine named Richard was once in a company and making $46,000 per month. The company got into financial problems and TERMINATED Richard. They were still getting their money from Richard’s downline but no longer had to pay out that $46,000 check each month, so yes their are companys out there that will terminate their distributors with or without cause.

That is such a heart wrenching story, but it does, unfortunately happen. Remember, their are really good companies out there. educate yourself and make sure that you have a winner.

Hi Ashley
You are so right – you would also have read just recently about EcoQuest – these people have just been terminated!!!
Companies with integrity are out there, only a few though – we need ‘pointers’/'directors’ like yourself directing the traffic to the companies with integrity, good products etc all time.
Thank you for this information, its invaluable.
Cheers
Julie
When I heard the news about EcoQuest and what they did to rob people of their dreams. I was sick to my stomach. This is why I do what I do and educate people on the pitfalls of this industry so they can find the good companies out there.

Hey Ashley,
Very good and honest post my friend! It is a crying shame that more people do not get a copy of Success in 10 Steps, read it and save themselves a lot of grief. People and companies are failing everyday, but the people need to know that it is not their fault. Thanks for the post and I know it will bring to light what many individuals need to do with their networking careers.
Friends 4 Life!
